On Thursdays Maryn brings her reading book home so she can find the vocabulary words in the story. As we have moved further into the school year we have seen progress with the homework assignments in subtle ways, such things as she now knows what story to turn to when opening the book. Yay! We celebrate the small steps. On this occasion she opened the book to a story about Ben Franklin, and when I read the title I said, "Ben Franklin, I love Ben Franklin. When you get finished I want to read this story because I want to know more about Ben Franklin." Maryn said "I know, I know," and proceeded to tell us about a kite with a key, thunder, lightning, and Ben got a "shot" from it. She went on to say that he put things on top of houses to keep people safe. As I wiped the tears off my cheeks, I told her that was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. Comprehension is a remarkable thing.

Three Cheers for Benjamin Franklin

Yes. Comprehension is a good thing...and HARD gotten, huh?
ReplyDeleteWhew. You know the experts say to give these kiddos about 7 years to do all their 'catching up'....of sorts. In theory.
At the end of the day I do realize how challenging our girl's lives are/have been in ALL they have to process, try to interpret/understand, and basically just grasp. I have a whole new appreciations for educating children. It's a process. It takes TIME. It does, however, come in time.
I love the comment "shot". Em says things like, "I'd like to put slices of cupumpers on my eyes" like you see in spa photos, etc. when someone has a facial mask. Ha. Back in the summer my brother was Emily the run down of the oil spill in the gulf. He talked and talked. 5 mins. later she asked, "What's an oil spill?" He explained what had happened in the gulf. She then asked, "What's a gulf?"
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Background knowledge....takes time, exposure, conversation, trips, talking, listening, reading.....over and over. Can slap wear you out, huh? But sooooo worth it.
Hugs from all of us.
Forgive typos in comment and over-use of words (ex. "like"). Hurrying...
